What is Mindfulness? (And Why It's Simpler Than You Think)
Welcome to The Sanctuary! ❤︎
Let me ask you something.
Have you ever tried to relax and your mind just keeps going and going and going?
If your mind is anything like mine, maybe it has a habit of rehashing old conversations, reliving awkward moments, and feeling burdened by things it can't change. Or maybe you've had this experience: you climb into bed, start scrolling through your phone, mindlessly swiping for who knows how long — and then, suddenly, you realize it's after 3 AM.
Does any of this sound familiar?
If so, welcome to the club. The club of being human.

Mindful Message: What is Mindfulness? (Voice Only) | Midori Tigris
Our Minds Are Just Doing Their Job
Here's the thing — in some form or fashion, we all do this. This is what our minds do. They think. They plan. They analyze. Our minds are doing exactly what they were designed to do.
But just because your mind is doing what it's designed to do doesn't mean it's always working in your favor.
Sometimes that busy, active mind can get carried away and start to feel like it's running the show. And if you're not aware of that... it is.
This is where mindfulness comes in.
What Mindfulness Actually Is (And Isn't)
Some people think mindfulness is some mystical practice that requires you to twist yourself into a pretzel and sit there for an hour. Or they think it's about good vibes only — pretending life is always sunshine and rainbows.
Let me be clear: that is not mindfulness.
Mindfulness is a fancy word for saying... paying attention to what's happening right here, right now, on purpose.
Yep. That's it.
It's not about noticing something by accident, it's about choosing to be aware, to really pay attention to what's happening in this moment instead of being carried away by the noise in your head or distractions around you.
Now, you might be thinking, "Ok, so... paying attention? How's that going to help with anything?"
Believe me, I get it.
Why I Started This Journey
I'm not speaking to you as a guru on a mountaintop, I'm speaking from my heart as someone who learned this the hard way.
Before I started practicing mindfulness, I was ungrounded, high-strung, over-reactive — and didn't have the inner resources to self-regulate. I knew something needed to change.
I started where you might be right now... searching for answers, looking for something that could help me feel more centered, grounded, and calm.
As I walked the path, I discovered books, audios, videos, courses, mentors... and the list goes on. And I came to realize that mindfulness was at the core of them all — all the mindset practices, the meditations, and the deeper inner work.
I liked that it was simple. It wasn't complicated. It wasn't mystical or woo-woo. It was simply learning to pause — to create a little space between an experience and how I respond.
Simple. Grounded. Real.
The Foundation of Everything Else
Don't let the simplicity fool you — mindfulness is the foundation on which many other practices are built.
And here's what's beautiful about it: you don't need special equipment, a quiet room, or even much time. You can practice mindfulness anytime, anyplace — whether you're paying attention to your breathing, a bird singing, or a leaf fluttering in the breeze. They're all ways of being a bit more mindful and present.
A Simple Practice You Can Try Right Now
Whether you're standing, sitting, or lying down, take a moment to get comfortable.
Bring your attention to the breath, allowing yourself to breathe in your own natural rhythm.
Notice the rise and fall of your chest as you breathe.
Notice the temperature of the air as you inhale and exhale, relaxing deeper and deeper with each breath.
Feel yourself becoming more at ease. More calm. More centered.
What you just did was pay attention to the breath — and what was happening right here, right now, on purpose.
That is mindfulness.
You Already Have This Power
This simple practice, which takes just a minute or two, can shift your state. And you can do it whenever you choose to pause and pay attention.
You've just proven to yourself that you have the power to pause and return to center whenever you choose.
And that, my friend, is a beautiful thing.
Lotsa Love,
Midori <3
